As you turn to John 10, let me encourage you to be back next week as we look at a section of Scripture dealing with eternal security. Can a person ever become ''lost'' again? Great question and we'll look at it next week.

Now, the purpose of John's gospel is to present the Lord Jesus as God come in the flesh. In doing so John gives a number of titles for Jesus.

The Word, The Son of God, The Son of Man
The Only Begotten of God, The Bread of Life
The Resurrection and the Life, The True Vine and others

But none is any more tender and endearing than one of the titles we find in today's text. Here He simply declares, ''I am the good shepherd.''

In this 33rd lesson of the 4th gospel I want us to hear, see, and know Jesus as the Good Shepherd. That is, to hear His voice, see His care, and know Him in the power of the cross.

Immediately following the healing of the man born blind, Jesus embarks on a lengthy discourse about a shepherd and his sheep.

In this sermon, Jesus borrows a picture from the culture AND utilizes one of the most vivid prophecies about the Messiah. His ancient Jewish audience would have understood the imagery and the religious leaders would have clearly heard the Messianic overtones in this simple proclamation, ''I am the Good Shepherd.''

John writes this book that we might understand who the Shepherd is and follow His loving voice out of the flock of dead religion and into the fold of God.
John 20:31 - ''But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing, you may have life in His name.''

I want to urge you today to hear His call, follow His lead, and to understand along with King David what a blessing it is to say, ''The Lord is my Shepherd.'' I want to show you 3 reasons I've found Jesus to be the Good Shepherd.
