John 9:1-41
The purpose of John's gospel is to present the Lord Jesus as God come in the flesh. And as the Incarnate God, Jesus preached sermons and performed signs as a means of declaring who He was and what He would do for anyone who would believe upon Him.
Of all the miracles John presented, none more clearly portrays the lost condition of a man and the necessity of having a cleansing encounter with Jesus than that of this man born blind.
In fact, thanks to John Newton, who wrote the song, ''Amazing Grace,'' it's probable that more Christians in the last 200 years have identified with THIS BLIND MAN'S testimony than any other. Because more than 1700 years before John Newton ever sang it, this is the guy who first said of his encounter with Jesus, ''I was blind but now I see.''
In chapter 8 He claimed to be the light of the world. The miracle recorded in chapter 9 is the illustration of that truth. Anyone who follows Christ will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
All the miracles of John are really miracles with a message.
They are signs that preach a sermon.
John 20:31 - ''But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing, you may have life in His name.''
As we walk through this familiar story we will see one who's blind eyes were opened. But more importantly, we'll see the One who opened those blinded eyes.
And we'll see crystal clear proof that Jesus is who He said He was...proof that is so clear even a blind man can see it.
1. The problem he experienced (1-5)
Before you can understand the meaning of the miracle you have to understand the misery of this man. His condition is our condition.
I want you to see that what was literally true of him is spiritually true of every person who believes on Jesus. Further, this story reveals what is spiritually true of every person who doe ...
