The story of the prodigal son would be nothing, but a story about falling and failure if not for the faithfulness of his father. We can read stories of prodigal sons and daughters from any age, but many of those do not always have happy endings, many of them end in tragedy and despair.
This story is really not so much about a fallen son, but about a faithful father.
The bible depicts God as the faithful father of man, of Israel, and of the church. He was there at the fall off Adam and Eve, instead of dismissing and destroying mankind, God clothed them and offered them a second chance. We find David committing adultery and killing the husband of Bathsheba, yet God forgave him and called him a man after his own heart.
Jonah was a prodigal prophet that tried to run from the calling of God, yet the Lord spared his life and gave him a second chance. Elijah wanted to quit and asked the Lord to take his life, yet God used him to do mighty things. In the New Testament, we see Peter as a man of many blunders and flaws, yet the Lord patiently waited on him to mature and used him mightily. The Apostle Paul was a persecutor of the church, injury many and placing others in prison, yet the Lord changed him and he wrote over half of the New Testament.
Lam 3:22 KJV - [It is of] the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
Lam 3:23 KJV - [They are] new every morning: great [is] thy faithfulness.
