Faceoff (24 of 75)
Series: The Gospel of John

John 7:1-36
Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. And we see Him magnified and glorified on every page of this 4th gospel. Be turning, please, to John 7. This is the 24th lesson and it brings us to the beginning of a new chapter and the beginning of a new section.
If the book of John were a movie, you would notice a change in the musical score. The strings would begin to play intense passages to signal that the tension is mounting and trouble is on the horizon.
John tipped us off in the opening chapter that scenes of this nature were coming. For Christ has come unto His own and His own were not receiving Him. This rising tide of hatred should not surprise Bible students. For about 8 centuries earlier Isaiah had prophesied that Christ would be “despised and rejected.” And that rejection hits a new level as Jesus travels to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles.
One writer said, “The smoldering resentment that Jesus encountered in chapters 1-6 finally burst into a blazing inferno of hatred.” (John MacArthur) Before chapter 8 concludes there will not only be a murder plot but a failed murder attempt. But for the Sovereign timing of God, Jesus would not have made it out of these 2 chapters alive.
I believe John records these incidents to maintain his purpose:
John 20:31 – “But these (signs) have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ and believing you may have life in His name.”
John wants us to see and hear the arguments for Jesus’ Messiahship and realize they make sense. Conversely, he records the skeptics’ arguments against Jesus’ Messiahship to show us their rejection of the Lord Jesus makes no sense at all.
Because of the Divine dust-up that occurs throughout this passage, I’ve called the message, “Faceoff.” This volatile season of the life of Jesus begins in this chapter with a series of 3 “face-offs,” a trio of conten ...
