SERMON SUMMARY: This sermon addresses Jesus' command to ''follow me''. We obey this command by 1) Following Informed. 2) Following First and, 3) Following Forward.



INTRODUCTION: A classic Far Side cartoon shows a dog in a car leaning out of the window and talking to his doggie-friend Biff. He says, ''Ha, ha, ha, Biff. Guess what? After we go to the drugstore and the post office, I'm going to the veterinarian to get TUTORED.'' I don't think that word means what he THINKS it means.

When Jesus says to us, ''follow me'', I wonder if it means what we THINK it means. Apparently, when it came to two or three would-be disciples of Jesus in the Gospel record it didn't. Jesus felt the need to clarify.

I understand that most of us are already ''disciples'' of Jesus. We're already ''following'' Jesus. So were the people in our example today. That doesn't mean we don't need to clarify and constantly GROW in our understanding of what it means to ''follow Jesus.'' At the end of the S.O.T.M. Jesus spoke of those who THOUGHT they were following Jesus, but they really weren't.

Mt.7:22 ''On judgment day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.' But I will reply, 'I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God's laws.''' Bummer. Wouldn't want to be any of THOSE guys, right?





I. FOLLOW INFORMED

Mt.8:19-20 ''Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, 'Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.' But Jesus replied, 'Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.'''
