John 6:1-15
Today we return to our study of John's gospel and we turn our attention to one of the most familiar stories in the whole Bible. It's the occasion of Jesus feeding thousands of people by miraculously multiplying a little boy's sack lunch.
This miracle is a special miracle. While all the miracles of Christ are wonderful, this one is unique in that it's the only miracle recorded in all four gospels.
This miracle is a sincere miracle. This is one of the many miracles that skeptics and liberals try to explain away. Some say it never happened. Some say it is grossly exaggerated. Others say it was a miracle of ''sharing.'' That the little boy's actions prompted others in the crowd to share their lunches.
I believe ALL the miracles of the Bible...A God that cannot heal the sick, cleanse the leper, and raise the dead isn't much of a God. If you can't trust Him with lunch you can't trust Him with eternity.
This miracle is a symbolic miracle. In addition to its actual and literal performance, this wonder is a miracle with a message. It's a sign with a symbol. This miracle tells us something about Jesus Christ.
John 20:31 - ''These things have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you may have life in His name.''
All of John 6 is really about Jesus Christ as the Bread of Life. He's portrayed as the Manna from Heaven that alone can satisfy the hunger of the human soul. And what Christ did physically on THAT day is a picture of what He can and will do spiritually in THIS day.
This miracle is a picture of who Jesus is and how He wants to distribute the bread of life to the hungry multitude that surrounds us every day. If we're going to do that we need to understand 3 things.
1. We must sense the love of our Master (1-5)
Love is one of John' major themes, here, and in his epistles.
For God so loved the world... ...
