John 5:1-18
Jesus Christ is a great worker of miracles and mysteries...
And indeed, the greatest mystery of all is not the mystery of the human body, as great as that is.
The greatest mystery is not how He scooped out the oceans or planted the trees in their forests. The greatest mystery is not that He performs miraculous healings of the body. No, the greatest mystery of all is that a holy God, boundless in righteousness and unparalleled in perfection would have anything to do with sinners like me and you.
That's actually the story put on display in today's text as we continue our study of John's gospel. Namely, that Jesus is indeed in the miracle working business. Oh yes, He is. I'm telling you the Great Physician hasn't retired and the balm of Gilead still flows from the hand of the One named Jehovah Rophe, the God who heals.
In John 5 Jesus makes His way back to Jerusalem and encounters a man who's been lame for 38 years. Although we don't know how old the man is, for nearly 4 decades some form of paralysis has robbed him of the ability to walk. And when Jesus gets done with him, he's up walking around and testifying about the Lord Jesus.
As we read this story, keep in mind that the focus is not on the man who was healed...nor is the focus on the crowd of sick people that didn't get healed...nor on the Pharisees that complained about the timing of the miracle. The focus is on Jesus.
John 20:31 - ''These things have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you may have life in His name.''
So there is something about this passage of Scripture that should cause us to understand who Jesus is, and cast ourselves upon Him, not merely for healing of the body but for salvation of the soul.
With that in mind I want to ask the question Jesus poses, ''Do you want to be healed?''
