Obey Judging (12 of 35)
Series: Obey Everything
Steve Jones
Matthew 7:1-2
SERMON SUMMARY: This sermon addresses Jesus' prohibition against judging others. We address this commandment in three questions: 1) What is the ''Judge'' in ''Judge not?'' 2) Why is it ALWAYS wrong for us to judge? 3) Where are we to judge not?
Introduction: It's been said that the most well-known verse in the Bible OUTSIDE of the church, other than perhaps John 3:16, is the verse we're going to talk about today - ''Judge not that you be not judged.'' Don't judge me bro!
We're in a sermon series entitled ''Obey Everything'' and today we're going to talk about how to obey Jesus' prohibition against judging.
I. WHAT IS THE ''JUDGE'' IN ''JUDGE NOT''
Mt.7:1-2 ''Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.''
In doing the research for this message I have to admit I hadn't realized what a pervasive teaching this is in the New Testament. The Greek word for ''judge'' is ''krino'' and it is used extensively in the New Testament. It is primarily used in the form of warning us NOT to do it. Let me take the time to give you a few other examples so that this may leave a lasting impression on us this morning.
Rom.14:13 ''Let us stop passing JUDGMENT on one another''
Col.2:16 ''Do not let anyone JUDGE you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.''
Ja.4:11-12 ''Do not speak against one another, brothers and sisters. He who speaks against a fellow believer or JUDGES a fellow believer speaks against the law and judges the law...who are you to JUDGE your neighbor?''
Rom.14:3 ''The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not JUDGE the one who does, for God has accepted them.''
Rom.14:10 ''Why do you JUDGE your brother? ...
