John 4:39-54
Jesus Christ is still in the changing business. Ironically, the only One who never changes is the only One who can actually change you and change me. Thank God He CAN and He DOES.
I heard about a lady who was getting married. She got nervous and was afraid she'd forget where to stand in the ceremony. He Daddy said, ''Go down the aisle, to the altar, and over to him.'' She said, ''Aisle, altar, him...aisle, altar, him...I'll alter him.'' And many people have walked down a wedding aisle thinking they are going to alter their spouse. But what you cannot do, Jesus can.
You and I cannot change a sow's ear into a silk purse but... The same one that turned water into wine can turn drunks into Dads, harlots into homemakers, and burglars into bankers...and He does it all when He converts sinners into saints.
I love the little story about the woman who was married to a drunk that got saved and delivered from alcohol. Someone asked if she believed Jesus could turn water into wine. She said, ''I sure do because at my house He turned beer into furniture.''
These verses were a little difficult for me to put into sermon form. In fact, last week you may remember that I postponed this message for a week. There are indeed some significant theological controversies in today's text, problematic issues that are not necessarily evident with a simple reading of this passage.
But I remembered that one of the last verses of John is like a key hanging by the back door that unlocks the entire gospel. John 20:31 - ''These things have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you may have life in His name.''
So there is something about this passage of Scripture that should cause us to understand who Jesus is, and cast ourselves upon Him.
We know, of course, there is only ONE way to be saved, by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus ...
