The Man at the Well (13 of 75)
Series: The Gospel of John
Mike Stone
John 4:1-30
This passage is typically referenced as ''the WOMAN at the well.'' While she was loved beyond measure there is at least a limited sense in which this woman is no more than a bit actress making a cameo appearance in a Divine drama of love. Her name rightly belongs in the closing credits of the film in a 3pt font size.
I'm saying this story is not about an immoral woman. It's not about her 5 husbands or boyfriend #6. This scene is not about the people of Sychar nor is it about the bungling disciples who are more concerned with their passing desire for lunch than with the eternal destiny of this lady's soul.
No. Like the rest of the drama that John records, the scene here in chapter 4 puts the spotlight on the virgin-born Son of God.
This story is an award-winning performance by JESUS. But for His performance in this scene and MILLIONS just like it, He will not receive an Oscar. No, because of what He did here, God the Father has highly exalted Him and given Him a name above every other name.
As the story begins, pay attention, and keep your eye on the MAN at the well.
John 20:31 - ''These things have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you may have life in His name.''
John wants us to know this GOSPEL and every story in it, including this one, is about Jesus Christ.
1. A seeking Savior (1-6)

That search sent His Son to the earth and more specifically, that mission now takes Him to the village of Sychar. But make no mistake. This journey to Sychar is no detour for Jesus. This is exactly why He came.
