John 3:1-21

Jesus Christ is the Savior of the World. All who come to Him by repentant faith, believing that His death on the cross was in their place AND that His resurrection from the dead was a literal, physical, and historical event can be forgiven of their sins. The Bible uses a lot of words and phrases to describe the Divine transaction that takes place when God reconciles a sinner.

First Peter 1 calls it being ''redeemed.''
Ephesians 2 calls it getting ''saved.''
Mark 10 calls it being ''ransomed.''
Galatians 5 calls it being ''set free.''
2 Corinthians 1 calls it being ''delivered.''
1 John 1 calls it being ''cleansed.''
Ephesians 1 calls it being ''forgiven.''
Isaiah 1 calls it being ''washed.''
Here in this text, Jesus calls it being ''born again.''

Because of the phrase ''born again'' and the inclusion of John 3:16, the account of the conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus is one of the better known portions of John's gospel. John tells us why the Spirit compelled him to record this encounter, one which is exclusive to John. In 20:31 he says - ''These things have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you may have life in His name.''

We see how God brings us to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God so we can have life in His name. In this text our Savior beautifully displays Himself as the God who saves. This message will include one of the greatest, perhaps THE greatest verse in the entire Bible. Countless preachers through the years have preached on John 3:16 as a stand-alone verse. And that's wonderful. But today, I want to intentionally this verse in its broader context as we look at this entire encounter between Nicodemus and the God who saves.

1. God confronts us about the nature of our sin (1-3)

There is at least one things that every person in this building has in common. We have all sinn ...
