John 2:23-25
Jesus Christ is worthy of our belief in Him. In fact, you cannot be saved without believing on Christ. But in this text we see that saving belief is a two way street. It's not only measured by what we believe about Jesus but by what Jesus believes about us.
Now, every job has a part of it that you dread. I like construction but I despise plumbing. I dread that part. Maybe you love babies but dread changing dirty diapers. Maybe you like cooking but you dread washing dishes.
There are parts of John that excite me. John 3:16, the woman at the well, resurrection of Lazarus...But I confess I initially dreaded these 3 verses. Several of the commentaries I have actually SKIP these verses. A few others gloss over it so quickly they hardly deal with them.
One famous preacher calls them a positive ending to chapter 2, evidencing, in my opinion, that he hasn't studied them very well. Here is a clear example of folks we might rightly call ''unsaved believers.'' Or more bluntly, ''Hell-bound believers in Jesus.''
We know why John recorded this little troubling trio of verses. John 20:31 - ''But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing, you may have life in His name.'' The people in this text give initial evidence of that belief. But sadly, Jesus knows their belief falls short of believing He is the Christ, the Son of God and therefore falls short of imparting life.
They verbalized the truth about Jesus. They placed a belief in Christ that is sincere from their perspective, yet Jesus does not receive it. They have bowed their heads, closed their eyes, prayed a prayer, walked an aisle, and filled out a card. They have cried crocodile tears, shouted ''amen,'' and even sung in the choir.
The thing that distinguishes this group of false professors from other ''lost church members'' is that this group SIN ...
