John 1:35-51
JESUS CHRIST is indeed our source of life, rest joy, and peace. I pray that today every one of us can rest in the Person of Jesus. As we turn to John 1, I want to ask you a question. Are you a disciple of Jesus? Or are you just a Christian? I mean, are you satisfied to just be saved? Or is there in you a hunger for more, a desire to grow, and a longing to actually live out practically who you've already become spiritually?
Far too many Christians are like grown men and women in diapers and pull-ups. We were born a long time ago but we've never really grown up in Jesus.
The verses before us today record the calling of 5 disciples of Jesus. 5 men who are not only saved but they devote themselves to becoming more like their Lord. As I wrestled with this passage I realized the key was found in our theme verse:
John 20:31 - ''But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing, you may have life in His name.''
In the calling of these disciples we have a living illustration of the LIFE that can be found by believing on Christ. And that LIFE is not just an eternal life in the hereafter. It's a radically transformed LIFE that is markedly different in the ''now and now.''
Next week we will see Jesus the first of His miraculous signs by turning water into wine. But first we pause for a few moments to watch what is, in many ways, an even greater miracle than the one at the wedding at Cana. He takes 5 common ordinary men and transforms them into disciples that would turn the world upside down and literally transform the course of human history.
As we examine their lives I want us to see 3 characteristics of their discipleship that ought to be instructive for us today.
