Revelation 17:1-18
Introduction
The second book of the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, the Proverbs are about developing wisdom, or discernment and prudence, to be able live rightly before God in His world. They show us that even in the seeming randomness of life we abide in God's wisdom and righteously navigate any circumstance. But we're also told that the stakes are high and we are to take these words and this journey seriously.
You see, before getting into situational proverbs, the book begins with the first nine chapters spoken by a father to his son, warning him about the right way to go about life and the wrong way. They serve as a prologue to the book overall challenging us to attain wisdom, to appropriate God's design for us and the world. Meanwhile, he warns his son of a figure called 'Woman Folly,' who seeks to seduce all people away from the way of righteousness and into her own home. He says,
Now, sons, listen to me,
and pay attention to the words from my mouth.
Don't let your heart turn aside to her ways;
don't stray onto her paths.
For she has brought many down to death;
her victims are countless.
Her house is the road to Sheol,
descending to the chambers of death, (Proverbs 7:23-27).
Her house is the road to death. Despite whatever attraction she offers, whatever seductive words she speaks, whatever enticing eroticism she shows, the wise and righteous are to resist her and flee.
