Legalism Explained (1 of 4)
Series: Philippians Chapter 3
Stephen Whitney
Philippians 3:1-6
A woman, who was a tourist, was standing in line to buy an ice cream cone at a drug store in Beverly Hills, CA. To her utter shock and amazement, who should walk in and stand right behind her, but Paul Newman – the actor who had started in many movies in the 1950’s and 60’s. He had won many awards including the Screen Actors Award and Three Golden Globe Awards.
The woman, even though she was rattled, was determined to maintain her composure. She went and purchased her ice cream cone and turned confidently and then left the store. However,
to her horror, she realized that she had left the counter without
her ice cream cone! She waited a few minutes till she thought all was clear and then went back into the store to claim her cone.
As she approached the counter, the cone was not in the little circular receptacle, and for a moment she stood there wondering what might have happened to it. Then she felt a polite tap on her shoulder, and turning around she was surprised to see – you guessed it – none other than Paul Newman. The famous actor
then told the woman that if she was looking for her ice cream
cone she had put it into her purse!
It can be easy to forget that even celebrities with all of their accomplishments are not different than us in the eyes of God.
Paul writes to warn the believers that it is not what we have accomplished in life that matters, but their faith in Jesus Christ.
There is nothing we can do that will earn forgiveness of our
sins. We are forgiven by grace through faith in Christ alone.
Salvation from the penalty for our sins is by grace alone,
through faith alone, in Christ alone to the glory of God alone.
John Calvin – “Salvation is the gracious work of God . . . God owes us nothing; so salvation is not a reward, but pure grace.”
