Romans 9:1-18
Open you're bibles to Romans 9. There are some things said in this chapter that we might have to say 'I believe it wholeheartedly; I just don't understand it entirely.' It's like the 5-year-old boy who was taught one Sunday about how God put Adam in the Garden of Eden, saw that he was all alone, put him into a deep sleep, opened up his side and took one of his ribs to form his wife Eve. Later that afternoon the boy was out running and playing. He came inside to the kitchen and his mother was there. He was holding his side and he said, ''Mom! My side's hurting. I think I'm about to have a wife!'' That little guy believed the bible; he just didn't quite understand it, right?
Last week, we said that the reason Romans 9-11 are so difficult to understand and are debated so often is that it brings to the forefront a very sensitive question: Does God choose people for salvation or do people choose salvation for themselves? When it comes to who receives eternal life with God forever, does God choose people or do people have a choice? We waded this section by looking at 3 Overarching Truths.
3 Overarching Truths of Romans 9-11
1. GOD IS COMPLETELY SOVEREIGN.
That means God is in COMPLETE CONTROL of everything and everyone everywhere at every moment. There are no exceptions to this rule, including salvation. Before anyone chooses God; God must choose them.
2. Everyone is personally accountable.
A person's response to the gospel determines their standing before God. They are responsible and accountable for how they responded, positively or negatively, to the Gospel.
Both of these truths are taught side by side in Scripture. They are not opposing truths; they are parallel truths.
3. Mystery is continually present.
How do you hold to both God's comprehensive sovereignty and humanity's personal responsibility? By admitting there is always an element of myster ...
