Holy Chutzpah
Steve Jones
Matthew 15:21-28
SUMMARY: ''Holy Chutzpah'' is a stand-alone sermon focusing upon the ''chutzpah'' of the Canaanite woman who sought healing from Jesus for her demon-possessed daughter. From her we learn four things about ''Holy Chutzpah'': 1) It is PROACTIVE with problems, 2) It is UNDAUNTED by tests, 3) It CRUSHES tests, and 4) It is APPRECIATED and REWARDED by God.
Introduction: A little old lady gets onto a crowded bus, then says to the young girl seated in front of her, ''If you knew what I have, you would give me your seat.'' The girl gets up and gives up her seat, then takes her magazine and starts fanning herself. The woman looks up and says, ''If you knew what I have, you would give me that magazine so I could cool off.'' The girl gives her the magazine. Several minutes go by, then the woman gets up and says to the bus driver, ''I'll want to get off right here.'' The bus driver says she has to wait until he gets to the next stop, a block away. She put a hand on his shoulder and said, ''If you knew what I have, you'd let me off right now.'' The bus driver pulls over, opens the door and tells her she can get off the bus. As she steps down, he says, ''Ma'am, I hope you don't mind my asking, but what is it you have?'' And the woman says, ''Chutzpah.''
Chutzpah comes from a post-Biblical Hebrew word. Its synonyms include audacity, guts, nerve, boldness and gall. While we may not see ''chutzpah'' on any of the lists of the gifts/fruits of the Holy Spirit, as we're going to see this morning, ''chutzpah'' is a valuable life-skill AND a quality which God appreciates and rewards.
Let's note four characteristics of ''Holy Chutzpah.''
I. Holy Chutzpah is PROACTIVE with PROBLEMS
Mt.15:21-22 ''Jesus withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon. And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, 'Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.'''
