Is Money the Root of All Evil? (3 of 5)
Series: The Bible Doesn't Say That
Josh Malone
1 Timothy 6:6-10
''Money is the root of all evil.'' - Have you ever heard that? Is it true. - Well, it's a short take on a verse that ruins the meaning.
We have a tendency toward two extremes in our view of money.
Money as Functional Savior (God) - Some view money as the answer to everything.
If I had more money I could save my marriage, be a better parent, be happier, be healthier, be more content, enjoy my job more.
Money as Personal Satan (Evil) - Some give money a moral value.
Money is the problem. ''They were doing well, then they got money.''
In churches this can show up in Prosperity and Poverty Gospels.
We shouldn't ascribe moral value... good or bad... to those w/ or without money.
Money is morally neutral. Money is not evil.
Money is not the problem per se... WE ARE.
Money is not a Savior, it's a horrible god, and it's not a devil, or evil.
Money is a TOOL, GIFT, WINDOW, AND A TEST.
A tool can be used for good/bad. (Hammer - Build a house / break window to steal a car.)
As a gift/blessing it must be stewarded.
As a window it reveals what's going on in our heart.
As a test we can pass or fail in our we manage having or not having it.
The Bible warns us not that money is a root of all evil... but THE LOVE of money...
1 Tim. 6:6-10 - 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Context: Paul has been addressing false teache ...
