Hebrews 3:7-19, 4:1-16
ILLUS. - Staying Up All Night - As a kid one of the goal many times when spent the night at a friend's house was to stay up all night, but the next day I felt HORRIBLE. - Maybe you've had a job where you have had to work night shift before and had to stay up all night, and learn to sleep during the day. - Maybe you've had those times we've been sick or someone else has and it kept us up, or a tragedy strikes and you are at the hospital all night. - As a kid staying up all night felt like a reward. As an adult it would feel like a punishment. - WE NEED REST.
But there is a rest we need beyond the physical... we need spiritual rest and we need eternal rest. - You can't live without physical rest. You can't get the eternal rest of Heaven w/o spiritual rest. We need rest. - But there are many who like the kid that wants to stay up late... continue on avoiding rest... doing life there way... avoiding God's way... and in the end they will find they will miss out on the rest they need most.
Salvation in the Bible is spoken of in several ways... for instance in John 3 it's referred to as the NEW BIRTH, in other places it is a DEATH, it's also a RESURRECTION. In Hebrews we see it talked about in terms of REST. - A rest that has both a present in future component.
A major theme begins in Hebrews 3 and continues through chapter 4... this theme of Rest.
Context: In Hebrews 3:1-6 the writer switches from Jesus is better than the angels to tell us Jesus is better than Moses. He's greater and worthy of more glory than Moses. Just as the builder of a house has more honor than the house. He tells us that Moses was a faithful servant in God's house but Jesus is the faithful Son over God's house. God's house is His people. So Jesus is the Son of God, Moses a servant of God. He then tells us we are God's house... if we hold fast... our hope... if we persevere. ...
