Hebrews 9:1-28
Do you remember the first time you felt guilty? - You did something wrong... and you KNEW it. I see this with my kids now. It's not unusual for my oldest to come tell me something trying to clear his conscience.
We all have a conscience. Some are more sensitive than others, but we all have them. That small voice inside that tells you ''that was wrong.'' Our conscience can help us make decisions, it can also mislead us into bad decisions. ''Well, I don't think I did anything wrong. I don't feel bad about it.'' - Well God's Word, not our feelings are the standard.
But your conscience can also weigh you down with guilt. - Like a kid that's done something wrong that randomly confesses things to their parents, we all want a clean conscience. Guilt has been around since the Fall.
Think back with me to the Garden of Eden. - Adam and Eve sinned... then what did they do? They COVERED themselves with fig leaves and HID from God. Guilt, shame, and fear came rushing into their lives with that sin. - I'm sure it FELT horrible. But that helped them know they did something wrong. - Then God comes into the scene and He COVERS them with animal skins... showing us only God can remove our guilt and cover our shame and it will take a sacrifice. - And God made a promise that the woman's offspring would crush the head of the serpent... and we know that is fulfilled in Jesus.
My point is that from the biblical perspective... dealing with our conscience, our guilt, our sin ... so that we can be reconciled to and at peace with God and know and worship Him... has been an issue that humanity has dealt with since the beginning.
But the animals skins that were used to cover Adam and Eve's skins... ultimately pointed ahead to a sacrificial system that would be handed down to deal with sin.... and that ultimately pointed to a greater sacrifice... a better one... the only one ...
