Hebrews 11:8-32
ILLUS. - Hall of Fame - In every sport there is a HOF. Every player would love to be in it, but they don't all make it. The truth is you are never surprised by who is in the HOF. It's the best. In Baseball... Babe Ruth, Willie Mayes, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams... they are all there. - In football... Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice... they are all there. In basketball - Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Larry Bird... they are all there. - In hockey? Do they have a HOF. Who knows. - You get my point! And we can predict the obvious ones.
Hebrews 11 is called by many of the Hall of Faith. - And it has the obvious ones right? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David ... but when you study their lives... you realize... these people all had things in their life that you might think would get them left out! Sins. Failures. The times they didn't act in faith. - Yet here they are. - It's a reminder that this Hall of Faith is a Trophy Room of Grace. - Lives lived by faith aren't lives lived perfectly. It's a list of people who were impacted by Gods' grace and by grace lived by faith.
You too can live by faith. We all should. We are called to. These people aren't superstars, they are trophies of grace, as are all who trust and follow Christ.
What does it look like to live by faith? The big idea of Hebrews 11 is that we are ALL to live lives by faith. OT, NT, and beyond... God's people are to live by faith. There are no exceptions.
The truth is none of us do this perfectly. This chapter is meant to challenge us to live by faith in every sphere, in every moment, of every day.
Today I want us to some truths of what a life lived by faith looks like. I want us ask some questions... to assess our life of faith... to challenge us to grow in our faith... or to discover the life of faith for the first time.
