Keep Going! (11 of 12)
Series: Better: A Study in Hebrews
Joshua Malone
Hebrews 12:1-17
Nobody wants to be a QUITTER. - But we have all quit. - Maybe you've quit a diet, a discipline, a good habit. - One of the big messages of Hebrews is to not quit the Christian faith. Genuine believers WON'T. There is no one else to go.
God calls us to endurance in the Christian life. We are to complete the course, run through the finish line. This is only possible by God's grace.
Left to ourselves we are all QUITTERS. - We'd give up! But for grace we would never enter the race, but for grace we'd never finish the race.
At the same time... God calls to active endurance. He calls us to pursue faithfulness all by His grace and in His strength. But we are to be active in the Christian life, not passive.
Context: There were some in the community of faith addressed in Hebrews who were considering turning back from the Christian faith. Some considered a return to Judaism. They were being persecuted, times were more difficult, and some were considering turning back. Throughout the book the author implores them to stay the course. He warns them of the danger of falling away. He teaches them that true saving faith is an enduring, persevering faith.
In chapter 11 he recounts many examples of faith filled believers throughout the OT as he challenges them to live by faith.
In chapter 12 in light of that hall of faith... he challenges them to live lives of enduring faith, to stay faithful... in the midst of adversity, challenges, and difficulty.
Hebrews 12:1-17- Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
