Psalm 13:1-6
Today we are dealing w/ the emotions of despondency and despair. - Despondency is an emotion of sadness, low spirits, discouragement. Despair of course is the loss of all hope. - So when we grow DESPONDENT we can be tempted to DESPAIR.
None of us wants to be sad, we don't want to be discouraged, we don't want to feel low ... but these moments come none the less. - And yes... Christians deal with these emotions, and Christians can battle depression.
Hear me say this before we get into the text... if you struggle with ongoing depression, deep sadness, if despairing... even of life itself... please get help. Let's talk. Life is too short, and filled with too many challenges to fight these battles alone. At times there is a medical side to this these things. I'm dealing today primarily with the spiritual part of this.
But what do we do when we from time to time battle the feeling of despondency, when we feel discouraged, when we are tempted to despair?
Maybe you've battled some of this in this Pandemic... maybe you've battled the illness or seen people battle it, maybe you've lost a job, maybe the isolation, the lack of normalcy, a lack of community... has been a real battle.
Researchers all the way back in May predicted that 75,000 Americans could die from ''deaths of despair'' due to Coronavirus... meaning deaths form drugs, alcohol, and suicide.
No matter why or when you find yourself in these ''dark nights of the soul,'' we need to understand that people in the Bible deal battled dark days as well.
Psalm 13:1-6- How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
