Intro/Attention

Is your life different because Jesus is alive? The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the most important event in all of history. Because He lives, we can be transformed by His power and might. I began a sermon series on Easter Sunday entitled, Because He Lives. We have talked about the life, peace, and hope that come from knowing Christ. Today, from Psalm 30, I'm preaching on this subject, Because He Lives...You Can Have Joy!

Before we dive in to Psalm 30, let's ask a couple of questions: What is joy and how can we have it? Biblical joy is choosing to respond to external circumstances with inner contentment and satisfaction, because we know that God will use these experiences to accomplish His work in and through our lives. Joy is a choice! But it does come from the Lord - and He alone is the originator of true joy. We don't have to produce it or drum it up on our own. Let's look at Psalm 30 and see a biblical example of true joy. READ TEXT

*Recent studies have shown that doing this one thing can add years to a person's life and is an accurate prediction of how fulfilling their marriage will be. What is this magic elixir? A smile. Smiling has truly remarkable effects. First, doing it actually makes you feel good even if you're not feeling good in the moment. Your brain's happiness circuitry is activated when you smile (regardless of your current mood). If you're down, smiling actually prompts your brain to produce feel-good hormones. Smiling is also a predictor of longevity. In a recent study, researchers looked at Major League baseball card photos from 1952. They found that the span of a player's smile actually predicted his lifespan-unsmiling players lived roughly 73 years on average, while beaming players lived a full seven years longer. Similarly, another study examined the smiles of students in an old yearbook, with almost spooky results. ...
