Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills! We're wrapping up our Crazy Generous series this weekend. And if you're just joining us, let me get you caught up real quick.
Being Crazy Generous is one of our core values here at Mission Hills. It's something that defines us as a church, and here's how we say it: We are crazy generous: we mirror God's outrageous grace with outrageous giving. And this is important to us because we believe that Christianity is rooted in generosity....in God's generosity. One of the most famous verses in the whole Bible, John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son that whoever believes in him would not perish but have eternal life. Our salvation is a direct consequence of God's generosity towards us and our practice of generosity as a church is really just an attempt to imitate what God has modeled for us.
The other reason we're passionate about generosity is because we believe that being generous is good for us. And there's two major ways that plays out:
First, the more we use our resources to serve others, the less we serve our resources. And I know it might sound a little strange to talk about serving our resources, but that's exactly what happens. And it's why Jesus said, You cannot serve both God and money. (Matt. 6:24). And of course no one sets out to serve money, but that is what happens over time when we don't practice generosity. The fact is, The more we hoard our resources for ourselves, the more we end up serving those resources themselves.
The second reason why being generous is good for us is that God blesses generosity. This is why Jesus said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.''' (Acts 20:35). God blesses generosity...in a variety of ways. Sometimes he blesses the generous use of our resources with more resources to be generous with...and sometimes he blesses our generosity in other ways, but ...
