Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills...so good to have you with us today. For the next couple of weeks, we're going to be talking about one of our core values as a church...one of the things that's just really important to us. We have several core values including being bible-driven and kingdom-minded...those are core to who we are as a church...but the one we're going to be talking about for the next few weeks is our core value of being crazy generous. And here's how we say it We are crazy generous: we mirror God's outrageous grace with outrageous giving.
And it's important to understand generosity in that context. Part of growing as a follower of Jesus is growing in our generosity because Christianity is rooted in generosity. If you think about it for a second, Jesus isn't just God in the flesh, he's also generosity in the flesh. He's a living, breathing, dying, rising expression of God's generosity to us.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (Jn. 3:16 NIV)
As followers of Jesus, we're not just recipients of God's generosity, we're imitators of it. We're called to mirror to the world God's outrageous grace with our outrageous giving. And here's the thing: We can't out-generous God...but it's a lot of fun trying!
Now when we talk about generosity, we often talk about three facets: time, talent and treasure. God calls us to be generous with our time, talent and treasure. All three of those are equally important and we talk about them all the time. In this series, we're going to be leaning in to the last one, our treasure, our money. And I'm going to be honest: I used to hate talking about money, because I was so afraid it would come across as self-serving, like I was just trying to get more money for the church or, worse, more money for me.
