The Best Advice Any Mother Ever Gave - Mother's Day Sermon
Mike Stone
John 2:5
Mothers can give GREAT advice. While our Lord is the Wonderful Counselor, our moms can give pretty awesome counsel themselves. I recently came across a list of great advice we get from our moms.
If you open it, close it. If you turn it on, turn it off.
If you take it out, put it back.
If you empty it, fill it. If you fill it, empty it.
Put on clean underwear
Wash behind your ears
Brush your teeth.
Don't run with scissors in your hand.
Don't swim on a full stomach.
The late Erma Bombeck once wrote, ''When your mother asks you if you want a piece of advice, it's just a formality. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway.''
Well n the case of John chapter 2, the servants at a Galilean wedding got some advice from a mother. They didn't ask for it but they got it anyway. And I am so glad they did. Because it really is the best advice any mother ever gave.
It is just 7 words in the NASB translation, ''Whatever He says to you, do it!'' But let's take these 7 words completely apart, take them almost one at a time, and see the best advice any mother ever gave.
The Catholic religion would have us look to Mary as a co-mediator and co-savior, I believe in this case we can at least look to Mary as a good example and an excellent counselor. In fact, there is no one in the world that could ever give you better advice on ANY subject than that: Whatever He says to you, do it.
1. The scope of this advice (whatever)
This is an all-inclusive word. This word is actually used in John 4:14 where Jesus told the woman at the well, ''Whoever drinks of the water I shall give him shall never thirst again.'' Translated here as ''whatever'' this word is as vast and broad as the ''whoever'' of the gospel itself.
John 3:16 says that WHOEVER believes shall not perish.
That means ANYONE and EVERYONE.
Joshua 1:9 says the Lord is with you WHEREVER ...
