Have you heard the phrase bad to the bone? The phrase meant a person was rotten to the core - a no good, dirty dog to be avoided. But in 1982, George Thorogood/Destroyers put out a bluesy-rock song that transformed the idea of being bad into a macho slogan meaning a person was as tough as nails. What was once bad was now good! Then came the movie, The Terminator, and Schwarzenegger became the poster child for ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-bad - bad to the bone!
This AM, I want to start a 3-week Easter series focused on (3) men who thought they were bad to the bone, but in actuality, it turns out, they were just rotten to the core. Today, I want to begin w/ the pretender - Judas.
The mere mention of his name invokes thoughts of treachery/deceit. In fact, few people today would even consider naming their son Judas. But it wasn't always this way. Judas was once a very popular name.
Like my middle name - Italo is derived from Italy, Judas was derived from the nation Judah - it meant Jehovah leads. Iscariot - refers to the region where he grew up - Kerioth-hezron - a town in south Judah. BTW - Judas was the only disciple not from Galilee.
Now, before we cast Judas aside in shameful disgrace, we need to realize there's a little Judas in all of us.
Have you ever bargained w/ God? God, if you'll do this for me, I'll do this for you. Even this AM as I was praying - thanking God for His blessings and praying for my family, I caught myself bartering w/ God over Colin's healing. It's so easy to fall into the trap of my will be done instead of God's will be done. Yet God's will is always, always, always better than our will.
Such was the case for Judas. Judas was a man w/ great ambition. Not only did he expect great things for himself, He expected them from Jesus. So, when Judas first met Jesus, he was certain Jesus was going to change his plight in life and restore Israel to greatness - that Jesu ...
