Several years ago, my wife, Gena, was at a pool party with some of her college girlfriends and their kids. Gena and her sister were given lifeguard duty. The kids' ages were around birth through ten years old. This was a huge responsibility because there were so many little kids. All of a sudden my preschool boy, Zayne, started bobbing down the steps into the shallow end.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, Gena saw my nephew-who was only a little bit bigger than Zayne-coming up for a breath, and then bouncing off the bottom of the pool, and then getting another breath, and then bouncing off the bottom of the pool, and then getting another breath as he descended further into the deep end. The first time he comes up, he got a good, solid breath; next he gets half a breath. Then he gets some water in a breath, and then he's going under. In an instant my wife performs two rescues: She grabs my preschooler, sits him on the side of the pool, and dives in and rescues my nephew.

You could say the kids were in over their heads. Sometimes life is like that. We face situations where we say, ''Man, I am in over my head. I've never been here before. I don't know what to do. I don't know what decision to make. I'm struggling with the courage to do this or to do that.'' Have you ever been in over your head? God has a great Word for us, a Word of encouragement for us, for when we are in over our head.

This morning I want us to open to Isaiah 43. The Scripture talks about being in over our head. Today I want to preach to somebody who's struggling. I want to preach to the people who are hurting. I want to preach to the people who are having great adversity in their lives.
