Before there was CrossFit, Beachbody, or Orangetheory, there was the workout program of the man named Charles Atlas. Charles Atlas was born in Italy in 1892. His original name was Angelo Siciliano. How's that for an Italian name? Angelo Siciliano immigrated with his family to the United States, where they lived in Brooklyn. He was a scrawny little kid, wiry. In fact, later in life, after he developed his workout program, he referred to himself as the 97-pound weakling.


He was the 97-pound weakling before he started his workout regimen and became the He-Man. He was inspired by the Brooklyn Museum statues of Hercules, Apollo and Zeus. As a teenager, one day he was walking along the beach with a girl he thought was really cute. A big, beefy lifeguard made fun of him for being so scrawny and kicked some sand in his eyes. At that point, he made a vow that he would no longer be the 97-pound weakling, ever again.


Angelo committed himself to learning to work out and to exercise. He became this massive bodybuilder who was huge and strong. He was considered by many to be the strongest guy in the world. He created a workout program that he sold to other adolescent youths who were tired of being 97-pound weaklings. I have a copy of the flier. The company actually is still in existence.
