Understanding Faith

Turn please to Hebrews chapter eleven, I want to talk to you tonight about understanding faith. Now, folks, I don't know what else you do in the Christian world but if you don't believe God everything else is a failure because the bible says without faith it's impossible to please God and if you displease God it doesn't matter whom you please and really if you please God it doesn't matter whom you please and the way to please God is to believe God and in order to believe God you're going have to understand what we're talking about when we talk about faith. Nowhere in the bible can I find a definition of faith. We do find a description of faith and that description of faith closely akin to a definition but not exactly the same thing is found in Hebrews chapter eleven and it's the great faith chapter linked to chapter twelve, but let's look at the first verse. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Now folks, faith is so vital, it is so important. As a matter of fact, the early Christians were described by this phrase, They were called believers before they were called believers. We were called Christians. As a matter of fact, no one has a right to call himself a Christian who is not a believer. That's just a description of a Christian, but not only is faith our description, faith is our duty. Some people were asking the Lord Jesus what should they do to do the works of God and Jesus answered in John chapter six and verse twenty nine, Jesus answered and said unto them, this is the work of God that you believe on him whom he hath sent. That's your duty, just to believe on God, your chief duty is faith and faith is the fountain out of which all other duty and all other service grows But not only is faith our description and faith our duty, it is our delight. What a joy to believe God and to know God through faith. So, let's just think tonight as we have a study tonight on understanding fa ...
