National Geographic once did a story highlighting the greatest set ups/scheme in U. S. history. The top 3 were:
Brooklyn Bridge scam
Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme; and
Birmingham murders
The year was 1985 in Birmingham, AL. Anthony Ray Hinton was charged with the murders of 2 restaurant mangers. He was arrested, charged, tried, found guilty of 2 counts of 1st degree murder, and sentenced to death. But it was all a set up.
30 years later, on Good Friday of 2015, due to DNA evidence, his conviction was overturned. He spent over half of his life on death row as the result of a set up.
