Going Out in a Blaze of Glory
Steve Wagers
Luke 24:50-53; Mark 16:19-20; Acts 1:9-11
In recent years, archaeologists have dug up first century cemeteries in Greece and Rome and have found many tomb stones that bear the Greek or Latin inscription for - ''No hope. For thousands of years, people have lived with no hope, and died with no hope.
We are living in days where people are living in hopelessness. Hopeless LIVES to hopeless LOOKS.
Society provides no hope.
Sin provides no hope.
Suds provide no hope.
Only the SAVIOR provides hope
Bethany - ''House of Misery'' (A Place of NO HOPE)
Jesus did many wonderful things at Bethany.
Mark 11 - Sent out disciples
Mark 14 - House of Simon the Leper (Alabaster Box)
John 11 - Lazarus raised from the dead
John 12 - Supper (Mary, Martha, Lazarus)
Luke 24 - Ascends back to Heaven
He stood between Bethany and Jerusalem
Bethany - Where they LOVED Him
Jerusalem - Where they HATED Him
I find it interesting that from the ''House of Misery,'' the Place of No Hope, He goes out in a blaze of glory, and that gives us hope.
1) His TRANSPORTATION Gives Us Hope!
(Luke 24:50-53)
(51) ''carried up'' (Gr. 'anaphero') Speaks of an escort
He had been TRANSFIGURED - Now He's TRANSPORTED
A) WHAT They RECEIVED (50-51)
BLESSED (2x)
He LIFTED UP HIS HANDS - I've never found where He TOOK THEM DOWN
Could it be that the reason we are so blessed is because HIS HANDS ARE STILL LIFTED? Those lifted hands put food on our table, clothes on our back, shoes on our feet, roof over our head, joy in our heart, Heaven in our future.
B) HOW They RESPONDED (52-53)
They're not POUTING - they're not DOUBTING -
they're SHOUTING
They know He's alive - Reason to Rejoice
He LIFTED UP HIS HANDS TO BLESS THEM (never taken down)
They LIFTED UP THEIR HANDS TO BLESS HIM (never take down)
