Banker's Panic of 1907 extremely damaging to mining and railroads in the West. In 1917, a dispute between mining companies and workers. Workers had a list of demands unmet by the company. Workers were faced with a choice:
Hard/underpaid work at a rock quarry
Unemployment/poverty

Out of that situation came the phrase, ''Between a rock and a hard place.''
