Mark 1:12-13 gives us Mark's account of what is often referred to as the temptation of Jesus. Mark tells us, ''And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness'' (1:12). Mark does not go into the details as other Gospel writers when he describes the temptation of Jesus by Satan in the wilderness. However, he does give us a couple of features that are not found in other accounts. As Mark speaks of the circumstances of the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness, there are important lessons to be learned that are well worth our time and thoughtful consideration.

Whatever God approves, Satan attacks. Blessings are always followed by battles. The hour of triumph is always followed by the time of testing. Mark tells us, ''And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness'' (1:12) where He was ''tempted of Satan'' (1:13). Jerry Vines writes, ''Jesus then moved from heaven's testimony to hell's tests. He went all the way from the dove to the devil. First, the blessings, then the battle.'' As Lloyd J. Ogilvie says, ''The wilderness temptation follows as surely as night follows day.''

Mark says, ''And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness'' (1:12). At His baptism, we saw Jesus anointed by the Spirit. Now, we see Him controlled by the Spirit.
