I. Introduction
Welcome to all our campuses, including church online. I'm so glad you're with us today. Hey, why don't you go ahead and grab a bible or pull one up on your phone and make your way to the Gospel of John, chapter 14.
And while you're making your way there, let me just say this: we're starting a new series today and I really believe that God is going to use this series in a powerful way in your life. For the next few months, we're going to be taking a verse-by-verse journey through a particular part of the Gospel of John that scholars sometimes call the Farewell Discourse of Jesus. Now, that's kind of academic talk for Jesus' Goodbye Speech.
See, here's what happened: Jesus had kind of burst onto the scene about three years earlier, teaching and performing miracles and he'd attracted a large group of followers and twelve close disciples...twelve guys that Jesus had been pouring into kinda 24/7. And these guys were pumped, ok? They had come to understand that Jesus wasn't just a great teacher or even a powerful prophet...they'd come to understand that Jesus was the Son of God himself and he was the Messiah...the savior they'd been waiting for that was going to come and set them free from all they were facing. That's where they thought this whole thing was headed. And they were pumped about it.
And then, right at the pinnacle of their expectation, Jesus dropped a bomb on them. He said this: ''My children, I will be with you only a little longer. (Jn. 13:33 NIV) He said, ''I'm leaving...I'm going away.'' And that really rocked their world. Suddenly all their hopes and their expectations...it just all fell apart.
And for the next three chapters in the Gospel of John, what we have is Jesus telling his disciples what they needed to know and do in order to get through it...to not only survive it, but to come through on the other side with momentum. And ...
