I. Introduction

Welcome to all of our campuses, including church online. So glad you're here today. Hey, listen, we have a pretty large passage to cover today, and I wrestled with whether or not to break this into a couple of different messages, but I really felt strongly that I couldn't honor God's Word properly by breaking it up artificially, so we have a lot of ground to cover today. The good news is that even though this passage seems to cover a lot of ground, it takes us to a very powerful truth that's not only easy to understand...it's got the power to really change your life in some significant ways. So why don't you go ahead and grab a bible and make your way to John 14:15.

Just a quick reminder that this whole section of John, chapters 14-16, is what we might call the goodbye speech of Jesus. And the reason Jesus gave this speech was that his followers were so pumped about who he was and what they expected him to do and right at the pinnacle of their excitement, Jesus said ''I'm going away.'' And their world kind of fell apart. So Jesus gave this speech to teach them - and us - what we need to know and do so that we don't fall apart when everything around us falls apart. And part of what he's trying to help them understand is that What we see as the end of something great often the start of something greater...if we can leave it in God's hands.

And I think this is so important, because this is just how life works, right? Life isn't static. Things begin and things end, things start and things stop. Now sometimes those are bad things, difficult things and we can't wait for them to end. But sometimes they're good things and we don't want them to come to an end. And our tendency is to try to hold on to them. [Rochelle illustration]. But sometimes by trying to hold on to something great, we can miss out on something greater.
