Series: When Everything Falls Apart
Craig Smith
John 16:1-2
I. Introduction
Welcome to all of our locations, including church online. I'm really glad you're here today. We are on week #6 of our series, When Everything Falls apart and we have been learning the secrets to facing difficulty without despair and without getting derailed by our circumstances. Most of the principles that Jesus has been teaching us are applicable to almost any difficult circumstance, but last he kind of pivoted into dealing with a very specific kind of difficulty...religious persecution. So last week, we learned the three R's of dealing with pushback from the world because of our decision to stand with Jesus. If you missed that, I really want to encourage you to make sure you get caught up. You can do that through the Mission Hills app, by going to the Mission Hills website or through any of the major podcast platforms.
Now, in some ways, what Jesus is going to teach us today is a continuation of what we were looking at last week, but at the same time, what Jesus is going to teach us today is probably the most important secret to facing difficult circumstances, whatever shape or form they take.
Let's go ahead and dive in. Why don't you grab a Bible and make your way to John 16:1
II. Main Body
''All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. (John 16:1)
This is really important. He's saying that everything he's said so far...and everything he's going to say...is intended to help us not fall away from him, to not lose faith or to fall into despair or get derailed by our circumstances. This is all about sticking close to Jesus...because sticking close to Jesus is the only way to get through difficult circumstances well. There are all kinds of difficult circumstances we might face, but there's only one way to get through them...stick close to Jesus.
Now, he goes on to talk about a specific kind of difficult circumstance:
