There is a story about legendary Green Bay Packer's football coach Vince Lombardi. After a dismal first half of football, during half-time in the locker room, Lombardi grabbed the pigskin and said, ''Boys, this is a football.'' Back to the basics.
From time to time, we all need to go back to the basics. Back to the most rudimentary and fundamental aspects of life. That's what we are going to do. We are going back to the basics. Back to the beginning. Back to creation.
Turn to the book of Genesis, the very first book in the Bible. It is important for us to study this book of beginnings. Dr. Adrian Rogers used to say that Genesis was the door that opens the rest of the Bible, that the doorknob that opens the door is Genesis chapter 1 and the key that unlocks the door is Genesis 1.1.
There is great truth in that. My pastor always said, ''If you want to understand the Bible you need to go back to the beginning. If you want to understand doctrine and Scripture, go the place of first mention.'' In Genesis you find the seed for every major teaching in Scripture, teaching that is echoed and expounded all the way through Revelation.
