Most of us like a good story. They engage our minds and capture our hearts. They jump start our imaginations and inflame our passions. Good stories invite us to see ourselves in them and something of them in the world. Someone said, ''Human beings are story-shaped creatures. We are born into stories, raised in stories, and live and die in stories'' (Dan Taylor).

As the children of Israel emerged from 400 years of slavery, they needed a new story, a true story, one that would shape their identity as a nation. They needed to know their story as the chosen people of God. So, God told them the story of not just their beginnings but the beginning of all things.

It begins this way, ''In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.'' After reading about the creation of heavens, the seas, the land and all the animals of sea, land and sky we read, Genesis 2.7, ''Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.'' In Genesis 1.27 we read that, ''God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, ''Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.''

We bear the image of God. It is an honor and privilege given only to mankind. Charles Swindoll writes, ''Because of this, only human life can walk and talk and fellowship with the Creator. Animals cannot. Fish cannot. Plants cannot. Only humans can enjoy this privilege because they alone possess God's image.'' For that reason, life is precious. Life is valuable. Life is sacred.
