I've never been great at math. I could handle the basic addition and subtraction stuff but when you start introducing all those funky signs, symbols and lengthy equations, my mind goes numb and confusion sets in. One of the first set of symbols you learn after your plus, minus, multiplication and division are the ones that look like little alligator mouths. You know the ones I'm talking about, the greater than and lesser than signs.

Those were easy when it was just to numbers to decide between, like 30 > 20 but then they'd complicate things by asking you to choose between two unsolved equations. Then you had to solve the problem (correctly) to determine which was greater and which was lesser. I suppose it was an important lesson to learn.

In the section of Scripture we will study today, Paul offers a lesson on what's greater and what's lesser. That kind of lesson is not only important when it comes to numbers and math but in life. We need to know what is greater and what is lesser.
• We need to know how to determine what's valuable and what's not valuable.
• We need to be able to discern between what's important and what's most important.

The Corinthian church was confused about what to believe thanks to the influx of false teachers. The Judaizers, Paul's perpetual nemeses, who dogged Paul at every turn and pushed the Mosaic law above the Gospel of grace, had sown seeds of confusion.
