Intro/Attention

We have been learning about spiritual warfare for several weeks now on Sunday mornings in a series I'm calling Supernatural: spiritual warfare and the battle for eternity. Surrounding us is a spiritual war - angels vs. demons, good vs. evil, light vs. darkness. But amazingly, most believers live as if this conflict were not even happening, as if the ''battle of the ages'' was just a fantasy or science fiction story. Yet not one of us is immune to the consequences of spiritual warfare. Although the players fight in an invisible realm, we all face the effects-pain, struggle, defeat, heartache-of their conflict every day of our lives.

Today, we come to Ephesians 6:18-20 and my title for the message is, Prayer and Spiritual Warfare. Last week we learned about the ''armor of God.'' We saw what we have been given by God for this fight. This week, we're going to talk about how we are supposed to fight, and why we are supposed to fight.

Prayer is the closing theme of Ephesians, and though closely related to God's armor, it is not mentioned as part of it, because it is much more than that. Prayer is not merely another godly weapon, as important as those weapons are. Prayer is the very spiritual air that the soldier of Christ breathes. It is the all-pervasive strategy in which warfare is fought. READ TEXT

The grammar of Ephesians 6 is very instructive. In the Greek, there is no break between verse 17 and verse 18. In the context of putting on the armor of God, Paul moves right into prayer without taking a breath. The weapons of our warfare and prayer are integrally connected. In other words, it is by prayer alone that we are able to engage with and overcome the enemy of our souls. We fight this fight through prayer! It is by prayer that we ''stand firm.''
