At the end of the service the head usher was speaking with the pastor. He said, ''Your stewardship sermons are improving. Still no money, but a lot more IOU's this week!''

When it comes to the issue of financial stewardship, every pastor knows what that feels like. Paul knew it, especially when it came to the church in Corinth...more IOU's and good intentions than actual giving. Paul hopes to turn that around.

A little background will help us make better sense out of these two chapters.

A severe famine had crippled Palestine and the Christians in Jerusalem, still a large contingency, was suffering.

Part of Paul's agenda on his 3rd missionary journey was to gather funds, receive a love offering, for the struggling believers back home in Jerusalem, most of whom were Jewish Christians.

The Gentile churches had received great spiritual benefit from the work of that church and since they had sown spiritual seeds, it was not too much to ask for some tangible help from the other churches.

It would also be a way to unite Jew and Gentil, tear down the cultural walls that separated the two peoples.

The Corinthians were to take part in love this offering. Paul had encouraged them back in 1 Corinthians 16 to put aside money on the first day of the week, on the Lord's day. When Paul returned, they would take what they had gathered and saved and send an envoy with their offering and that of the Galatian churches to Jerusalem.

Well, apparently, along with the good news Titus brought back about their response to the severe letter Paul had written and their renewed love for him, there was some not so encouraging news about the offering...the only thing collected so far were the IOU's and some good intentions.
