Mark 13:1-37
Open your bible to Mark 13. The title of the message is 'What Is This World Coming To?'. But let me be clear about something. This chapter is about discipleship. Jesus isn't making 'end time' experts. He's making present time disciples. He's growing disciples who want to obey Him and who are committed to the mission. Listen, if you care more about deciphering the end times than evangelizing your neighbor, you've missed the entire point of prophecy in the Bible. Our growing knowledge of the future should lead to growing Gospel faithfulness in the present.
With that said, within this chapter Jesus does talk about 3 Future Events:
1) The Destruction of Jerusalem
2) His Second Coming
3) End of the World.
But here's the problem we face: He deals with them all at the same time. He blends the near future and distant future, and there's no easy way to discern which event exactly Jesus is always referring to.
I think that's very intentional. Why? To confuse us? No. To discourage us? No. Simply to focus us. On what? On the main point which is this: There are a lot of things coming that we don't fully understand, but Jesus does. So stay connected to Him and faithful to Him.
Let me say again, this chapter is all about discipleship. So if you're waiting to hear about dispensationalism, or premillennialism, or the rapture of the church, or the identity of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse--you're going to be disappointed. We're going to talk about discipleship. Look at verses 1-2 (READ).
V1-2: ''Then as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, ''Teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!'' And Jesus answered and said to him, ''Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down.''
Jesus is just a couple days away from the cross, and they are walking out ...
