Mark 14:1-9
Open your bible to Mark 14. What does love for Jesus look like? We know what His love for us looks like. But what should ours look like for Him? Is it possible to see it and recognize it? Real love does more than talk, right? Real love is more than a feeling. Real love always reveals itself in action. Does deep devotion to Jesus have visible, verifiable evidence?
I think Mark would tell us 'yes' and then recount the story we are about to study in Mark 14:1-2, 10-11 (READ). This is what theologians call a Markan sandwich. Doesn't sound very tasty, does it? A Markan sandwich is where Mark places an important flashback between two pieces of current information. You say, ''What do you mean Bob?''
Bread slice #1 is in verses V1-2. They show the hate and contempt the religious leaders have for Jesus. They want to do everything they can to silence Him for good by finding a way to murder Him without hurting their own reputations.
Bread slice #2 is in V10-11. They show the depravity and deceit of Judas Iscariot. This guy is a wolf in sheep clothing and has been hiding in plain sight. Now we know his true thoughts and feelings concerning Jesus. He wants him dead too. How deeply do you have to loathe someone you've spent nearly every day with for 3 years and want to end their life? Both the religious leaders and Judas display their love for self and hate of Jesus through their plans and actions.
In between these two layers of intense hatred for Jesus, Mark places something a very sweet, very tender, very satisfying flashback. Within this flashback, he shows us what genuine love and deep devotion to Jesus Christ looks like. He flashes back to a precious moment that happened just a few days earlier. Look at verses 3-9 (READ). Real Love for Jesus Looks Like:
1. UNRESTRAINED WORSHIP
