This morning, we're kicking off a brand new series we're calling, SEVEN CHURCHES. And the reason we're calling it seven churches is because in the book of Revelation, there are seven literal churches that God addresses...
There are also seven kinds of church members as well, and over these next several weeks, we're going to see what God had to say to the people that made up these seven churches.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's unpack a few things that we will need to know before we move forward. Like, first of all-who wrote the book of Revelation? Answer-John.
Let's put that into context this morning-You see, Jesus picked twelve disciples while he was here on the earth and John was one of them.
John was a devout follower of Jesus and was there for his entire ministry. He saw all the miracles... all the healings... He was there when demons were being cast out and He was there when Jesus walked on the water. John was there for all of it.
John was also there when Jesus was being beaten... and nailed to the cross... John was there when Jesus died and he saw him first hand after Jesus rose again from the grave.
John then walked with Jesus for 40 days after he had risen. He watched Jesus preach and teach and continue his ministry. He heard Jesus proclaiming his resurrection and stayed with Jesus until he ascended back into Heaven.
After that, John stepped up and became a great leader in the early church, and over the course of several decades, John continued to be faithful, as he watched all the other apostles die brutal, bloody, martyr's deaths.
They tried to kill John as well, but he refused to die. Church history tells us that at one point, they boiled him alive in oil, and EVEN THAT didn't kill him, so they exiled him to a little rocky island called Patmos (off the coast of modern-day Turkey). [MAP] (3 to 4 hour boat ride f ...
