Revelation 2:18-29
This morning, we continue in the series we're calling SEVEN. We're in the book of Revelation and over the past several weeks, we've been looking at the literal messages that God had for literal churches and he spoke these messages through his servant John.
If you'll remember, John is on the island of Patmos, [show map] and Jesus is telling John what to write. He began this journey by writing a message to the church at Ephesus.
This was a church that had a lot of things going for it, but they loved serving more than they loved Jesus. The people in this church loved GOING to church more than BEING the church... and so Jesus told them, ''Repent!'' He then went on to tell them, ''If you don't repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.''
The second church was about 30 miles north in the city of Smyrna. This was the church that was being severely persecuted. Their pastor ''Polycarp'' was actually murdered because of his faith in Christ.
We learned that they were not only persecuted, but they were also in poverty. But Jesus told them in verse 9, ''I know your afflictions and your poverty-yet you are rich!''
He told them to ''be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor's crown.''
Last week, we hopped back on our camel and rode 49 miles further north to the city of Pergamum (the capital city of Asia). Jesus had a clear word for this church as well.
If you'll remember, he referenced this city as ''the place where Satan has his throne.'' It was a very corrupt city and the corruption made it's way into the church. They were believing the wrong stuff and their behavior contradicted the teachings of the Bible... so Jesus called this church out for being apostate and told them to REPENT!
This morning, we're going to be back in Revelation chapter 2 and the next city on this journey is ...
