Proverbs 23:1-35
This morning we honor our Fathers, and the reason we do it is because God told us to. He said in Exodus 20:12, ''Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.''
Have you ever wondered why God commands us to honor our Fathers? Well, one reason is because of the meaning of the word ''father.'' In the verb form... the word ''Father'' literally means, ''Founder.''
It means, ''To be the foundation'' or ''to Author.'' In other words, Dad's are supposed to be the authors of their homes. And guys listen, God wants you to author a God-loving, God-fearing, God-honoring... HOME.
Sounds pretty easy... right? But you know as well as I do that being a Dad... (parent today) is HARD!

I heard about this Dad that was shopping with his little boy in the grocery store. (strapped him into the shopping cart) The kid had skipped his nap, and had too much sugar, and was irritable and knocking things off the shelves... and the entire time, the Dad remained fairly calm.
• This lady noticed the little boy and saw that he was misbehaving and she could hear the Dad saying in a calm voice, ''Now Ronnie, settle down...''
• When the Dad went to grab something off the shelf, the little boy stood up in the cart and the Dad said, ''Now Ronnie, calm down... make good decisions...''
• The little boy got frustrated and threw a gallon of milk on the floor and the dad said, ''Ronnie, chill out... don't lose your temper... It's going to be okay...''
Well, when they got to the checkout line, the lady was so impressed with his parenting that she told him, ''Sir, I have been so amazed today watching how you've handled this situation with your son Ronnie. You've been so calm and encouraging'' and as she was talking, the man interrupted the lady and said, ''Ma'am... I'm Ronnie!''
