No Longer Slaves (3 of 5)
Series: Fresh Wind - Romans 8
Craig Smith
Romans 8:12-16
Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills and to week number three of our Fresh Wind series. What we're doing in this series is exploring the fundamental difference between Christianity and every other religion in the world. Every other religion, in one way or another, teaches that righteousness is something we have to fight for. We have to fight to be righteous...and the motivation for fighting to be righteous is the hope that if we put our backs into it enough, if we row hard enough against the current, God will accept us. But Christianity says that we don't have to fight for righteousness because the fight for righteousness has already been won for us. Through the gift of God's Son, Jesus, and what he did on the cross for us, the price of our sin has been paid, the debt of all the ways we haven't been righteous has been canceled and we're forgiven and free to begin...not practicing a new religion, but experiencing a new relationship with God.
Now, last week, we saw one of the benefits of that relationship which is that we begin experiencing the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit, who takes up residence in us the moment we say yes to faith in Jesus...the Holy Spirit will ultimately raise us from the dead for eternal life with God. But, as we saw last week, that resurrection power isn't just limited to what the Holy Spirit will do at some point in the future. The truth is that the more we listen to the Spirit, the more we experience the life that's coming... now. That the more we listen to the spirit, the more we can experience his resurrection power at work in the present...and the more we listen to the Spirit, the more he breathes new life into the dry bones of our relationships, our struggles, our hopes and our dreams...right now.
What we're going to do today is talk about one of the greatest obstacles to listening to the Spirit. And ...
