Series: Fresh Wind - Romans 8

Romans 8:26-28
Introduction
Hey, welcome to Mission Hills. So good to have you with us this today. We're in the midst of a series called Fresh Wind and if you're just joining us, let me get you caught up real quick.

Now there's a little play on words there because in the Greek this was originally written in, the word for Spirit basically means breath or wind. So Jesus wasn't just giving his followers the Holy Spirit. He was also telling us how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. The Holy Spirit is like a fresh wind that, if we learn to raise the sails, propels us forward in our relationship with God.
And the presence of the Holy Spirit is one of the most profound differences between Christianity and every other religion. See, every religion has rules...every religion has commands and laws. And every religion except Christianity says that if you do a good enough job following the rules, God will accept you. But Christianity says that Jesus died to forgive us for the ways we don't follow the rules...for our sin...and that if we put our faith in him, we're forgiven. God accepts us on the basis of our faith in what Jesus has done. And then Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit who begins to transform us from the inside out. And rather than the rules being the basis of our acceptance, the rules paint a picture of who the Holy Spirit is helping us become. In other words: Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit so we could be what the rules tell us we should be.
That's what we've been talking about in this series. How to raise the sails to catch the fresh wind of what the Spirit wants to do in our lives. Today we're going to talk about two practical and powerful ways the Holy Spirit does that...about two specifi ...
